Historically, fabric painting was were very popular in the Far East. Although the dyes were developed around 1850, it was not until approximately 1920 that silk painting started to develop as we know it today. Russian emigres in Paris earned a living making exquisite men’s handkerchiefs. Experimenting within their trade, they started painting on silk fabric - and the art of silk painting was born. It soon expanded from handkerchiefs to scarves and wall hangings and grew to such an extend that at one time there were twenty six silk workshops in Paris. Today, Silk painting is a very popular art in both America and Europe and is used in all fashion industries, from clothing to interior design. |
